Older updates

  • 6th August. Observed: On eBay, a dead ringer for a Svea 123 was seen. It was stamped Fire-Lite but had no other markings whatsoever; the lacquer was flaking off. Anyone know anything about this brand? Another eBay Observation; the Brunton company sells a number of stoves called 'Brunton Climber' and similar. These are all Optimus stoves! New content: How To Estimate The Price And Value Of A Stove. New brands: Hilary, Ranger, Lion, Fire-Lite, Stratus and Esuya. New mystery stoves added. Contributors to this update were Dave Thorncroft, Jose Rolon, Thor Arne Jensen, Bill Kumpf, Peter Priegl, Robert Creighton, Vickie Beason, Neil McRae & Shinzo Kouno.Other updates: I finally gave in and upgraded the site from free to Tripod Plus. This primarily to get rid of their ads. I also made a new, secondary menu at the bottom of the front page to make navigation even easier. The discussion board has seen increased traffic lately. This is way cool, and it would be even cooler if people were better at posting questions there instead of in the guestbook where there's no handy reply function.
  • 18th June; it's a long lazy summer and time enough to catch up. Hopefully.New content: The article that should have been the first here: Lighting a stove. It covers most of the stove types I'm aware of. Also, a case study of a Fuhrmeister no 7. New brands: Pragus from Austria. Bad news from Optimus! Base-camp reports that Optimus has drastically cut down their spare parts production for the classic kero stoves. THIS is the time to stockpile, guys - it's not as if there are a lot of alternative spares manufacturers. Well done, Albert! The Handi website at http://handimuseum.tripod.com has just passed one thousand visitors. Contributors to this update were Joakim Soya, Albert White, Terrence Marsh, Terje Nordvik, Shinzo Kono and Mike Williams.
  • 6th June; Major visual overhaul has happened- I'm going 'widescreen'!. If this update went well you are now seeing a site that is more compact, easier to navigate and a lot easier on the eyes. Actual updates: The safari pictures from this spring's Ekeberg market is in! Eat your hearts out; I did. Complimentary shots involving Ross Mellows and Arne Aasgard. New items are the article Stove Types, and a Hall of Fame that's going to need more pictures as soon as I can get hold of them. New brand: Express. More contributions have already arrived but I must add those to the next update.
  • 6th May; The semiannual Ekeberg market was a blast and I've a load of pictures that will eventually get uploaded. I also met Ross Mellows of Spiritburner.com and major stove collector Arne Aasgard, and the latter showed me his vast collection. I'm too overwhelmed to be envious, but I can assure all that my site is obviously NOT covering everything on the topic of stoves yet.
Updates; the links list has been updated and pruned. A number of sites has gone, moved or been updated. I've also been into the backlog of old contributions and found some pics and info I've overlooked - some of it from half a year ago. Contributors to this update are Terrence Marsh and David Cooper.
I have decided to let the Collector's Bazaar go. The very low number of postings indicated that it wasn't needed, probably since Ebay is the online market of choice for used stove collectors now.
  • 24th April; it's been quite a while since the last update and not only the work done on the Handi museum can be blamed for that. New brands: Simmons, Globe Stove & Range Company, Primas, Climax.  New brand feature page for Lux. New case study; a Gustav Barthel Norma 11. Contributors to this site were Jack R., Albert 'Handi' R. White, Jim Worley, Bjørn-Tore Bugge, Nick Piotrowski, Mark Lilly, William E. Largin, Greg Smith and David. I've also tried to catch up on replying to emails and discussion forum postings.
I've got something to look forward to! In a couple of weeks the annual Ekeberg market will happen and I'm bringing a greedy camera. I may even bump into Ross Mellows!
  • 1st March; added a bit more to the feature on 'Mad' Monte Dodge. New brands: Adam. Contributors to this update were Monte Dodge, Darren Preslar, Peter Watchorn, Vicky Beason. Not much work has been done on this site for the last month as I've been busy building the Handi site.
  • 7th February; added a Stove Restoration FAQ. Contributors to this update were Monte Dodge, Albert White, Arne Aasgaard, Tryggve Karlsen and Leslie Pongrass. New brands: Pongrass (from Australia). Parasene and Monitor has been given full feature pages. Starting this update, a new feature is 'Collectors Extraordinaire', dedicated to a few collectors among us that takes the hobby further than most. First man out is Monte Dodge!
  • 7th January; New brands are Safety, Perfection, Game Junior and Atlas.  Contributors to this update were Ross 'Spiritburner' Mellows, Bo Ryman, Loretta Zarow, Neal Doucette, Ron Garratt and Laurence Langley. Some cosmetic work was done on the Discussion Board, and the Guestbook has been slightly updated too.  New feature cases: Høvik Verk Primus 210 and Ace Picnic Stove.  There are new additions in the link list. Meanwhile, the Mystery case 6 has been identified by Ross Mellows as a Glogau 75S - thanks again, Ross! Valor has been given its own feature page. Due to lack of interest the Display Case idea has been cancelled. While I was at it I pruned away the My Projects page too - sometimes less is more. By the same policy I've downsized the left index, moved much of the content list to the front page, and moved the database inventory away from the front page. Hopefully these design changes will not impair the surfing ease.
  • 21st Dec; New brands are Fama, Sunflower, Red Heart, Lane, YangzhouBarridon, Le GrillonPunker, Omega and Rinnai aka Westernfield. A new mystery stove this time; it's an ancient Glogau, but which model is it? There's also a whole slew of additions to the Lost Ones list - don't you wonder where all those old brands went? Contributors to this update were 'mud ball', Albert 'Handi' White, Laurence Langley, Neil McRae and Tommy York. French and Japanese brands finally got their own page, and the Handi brand got one too with good help from owner Albert. And with the help of Neil McRae, Pifco is no longer a lost brand either. New feature case: a Primus 96L. There's a new addition to the Links. Keeneyed people might notice that if they add this site to their Favorite list there's actually a new icon, too.
  • 30th Nov. Big update! More brands have been given full pages. These are AGM and Phoebus. This is being done to make the alphabetical pages smaller and thus faster to download. Contributors to this update were Neil McRae, Bo Ryman, "Charmiam", Alan Ford, Ron Garratt and "southamerican"; those contributions mostly happened months ago but now the pics are up - at last! New brands: McGraw-Edison, Royal, Ashok, Torch, Parimal, Marque F. Besnard, Glowmaster, Lindemann & Hoverson and NET. The Radius page has been updated quite a bit with new information. Mike Baker's mystery stove has been identified as a Monitor Minor, aka Minor Picnic. A new article is up, with wick stoves as theme. Indian stoves have got their own page. The linklist has grown a bit again. A new page has been dedicated to 'The Lost Ones', stove brands which I have heard about but know little or nothing about. Obviously I'm very interested in hearing from people who know more about these brands.  New case studies are a British Military from Westinghouse, a Coleman Solus and the wick stove Beatrice No 3.
  • 23rd Nov; added more collectors to the register and a new pro used stove seller to the linklist. Picture contributors to this update were Mike Baker, Pete Wilson, Mad Monte. The brands Gustav Barthel and Tilley has been given their own feature pages. There's a new mystery case, too. New brands: Enterprise
  • 21st Nov; back from another long break. Started with the heavy job of chopping the index pages into smaller chunks. Little did I realize when I started off that so many stove brands were going to be put in! (Incidentally, I'll appreciate it if you note me of any bugged links you might find here). While I was at it, I removed most of the ads as they weren't bringing in any income anyway. Scandinavian collectors: Check out my new site at http://home.no.net/primuser! I've put up the same link as Norske Sider at the left border as well. There's no new stuff in this update as I needed to get the tech stuff right, but I've got a mountain of files waiting for inclusion.
  • 27th Sep; the first collectors have volunteered to be put into the Register. Also, a great day to be a collector of Norwegian stoves: the little-known Fuhrmeister brand is in fact Norwegian! Other new brands are Pak Cook, Salsius, Selus, Landers, Flexolite, Globe Gas Light and Apollo. Gene Wilson of http://www.huntnhound.co.uk/ contributed a nice batch of thumbnail pics and I'm putting them up. Other contributors were Pete Wilson, Mike Baker, Bill Atkinson and David Cooper.
  • 6th September; back in business after a longer than expected delay. I have received a small mountain of pictures and info, and will push to get updated as best as I can. Moved source site to a new computer; hopefully this will not result in unintended changes. New: The update information block contains too many thanks to contributors now to delete casually, so I've moved the older stuff to the new page Older updates
  • Note: During August my Internet access will be spotty at best. Please be patient if you do not get a quick reply to your mails. I'm having a vacation, then moving up north.
  • 3rd August; many new pictures generously provided by Jim Hoff, Ken Weida, Ken Lundeen, Ross Mellows (again!) and 'southamerican'. Special thanks also to Yutaka Suwabe and Albert White for volunteering fresh information. New brands: Gerry, JC Higgins, Thermos, Pamus and Beatrice. Case studies is a new section where I'll portray specifc stoves when I have an abundance of pics and/or information; a Primus no 54 is first out. Latest experiment: the collectors' who-is-who. Svea now has its own feature page too.
  • 29th June; minor technical modifications. Some database corrections. The brand quicklist is now clickable. The Stoves By Country section has grown by several pages. Thanks to Ross Spiritburner Mellows, a whole slew of new pictures have been added. As of this date I'm also making some of the database clickable for large scale views, noting where applicable. New brands are Winchester, Evinrude, Feuer, Star, Clamfor, Sears & Roebuck, Eaton's and Winnebago - from this update, the database has more than 160 brands! I tentatively added a search function, the Users' Bazaar ( an open announcement board for stove ads), and finally a counter.  I still have a lot of unused material on my hands which could have been added to this update, but I need to see what the already changed parts look like online so I'm publishing this now.
  • 19th June; added feature pages for Coleman, Optimus, Primus and Radius. The information was moved from the database in order to ensure faster general surfing. Also added a My Projects page for my current restoration projects. New pics; some Sieverts, Primuses, Høvik Verk and a few mystery stoves. Alan Ford was kind enough to contribute information and pictores about the brands Panda, Royal Kampen, Primus and Valor. A handful of other, minor additions to the database as well from numerous sources; Nova, Ogonek etc. Ross Mellows has been kind enough to help me identify the country of origin for a number of stoves.
  • 12th June; added the Stoves By Country and Mystery Stoves sections. Also updated My Collection with more stoves, pictures of the Plumbob stove by courtesy of 'Flying' Cyril Benn.
  • 8th June; moved the site from Terrashare to Tripod because the former service is ceasing to operate. Added several pictures of the Danish stoves Ginge and Dana, by courtesy of fellow stove enthusiast Jan Rønnesgaard. Also changed the site's name from The Camping Stove Enthusiast to The Stove Collector.
