Gustav Barthel

Logo, stylizised

Picture donated by Pete Wilson

The German company Gustav Barthel was one of the largest european stove brands during the beginning of the 20th century. Manufacturing in Dresden their production covered stoves, blowlamps, soldering lamps and pressure lamps. Seeing how some of their designs are practically identical with Primus models it's possible they were producing those on licence.

GB were also present in the USA as early as in 1908 with an office in Boston, Massachussets. In the same city they ran the Barthel Blow Lamp Company that - the name nonwithstanding - delivered the full range of GB products, and they also seem to have delivered stoves to Globe Gas light Company; how close these companies actually were is unclear but the stoves had both names.

The quality of Gustav Barthel products were generally very good, and working samples can still be unearthed from the occasional market or garage sale.

The current status of the Gustav Barthel company is unclear. The latest Juwel instruction leaflet encountered was from 1982; the stove was a 34 and had the GB logo but the name VEB Lötgeräte Dresden as manufacturer.
